Don't Escape 2: The Outbreak

Don't Escape... 2! *E3 Peggle gif*

In the second of the Don't Escape Trilogy, you're right smack in the middle of a classic zombie apocalypse. Your friend Bill has been bitten, and there's a horde on the horizon that's going to make it to your current location by sundown. Your last chance at survival is to hole up in an abandoned building you've found and hope and pray that you can set up enough defenses to ward off a mob of mindless, flesh-eating killers. There's a lot more than just your abandoned building at your disposal this time, though: you can explore a handful of other locations that have supplies to scrounge, and you can even recruit a couple other survivors.

This makes the game waaay less linear than its predecessor. Don't Escape, like the games it was riffing on, only had one 'correct' solution, and the end sequence was more of a way to check your answer than an actual set of multiple endings. Don't Escape 2, however, has multiple equally valid solutions to surviving the night, and more than one way to go about them. There's even an achievement system, to keep better track of what you have and have not tried.

To round out this increase in scope, Don't Escape 2 also introduces a time management system. Going from place to place and doing any kind of strenuous work will tick down the time you have until the zombies arrive, and you have to carefully strategize all your moves to make sure you can get everything done.

As mentioned on the first Don't Escape, you can buy the whole Don't Escape Trilogy as one package on Steam for five dollars. There's no new content, but it would support the developer, and let you have the achievements in this game as Steam achievements.
